Ryan - Month 12

Before we get to the big one year post, a recap of fun things Ryan did and learned in his final month of being zero years old:

  • Ryan got an Elmo book for Valentine's Day that had a cute little poem/story.  The story ends by asking "Will you be Elmo's Valentine?  Can Elmo have a kiss?"  And wouldn't you know it, but that furry red monster was enticing enough to teach our child to give sweet, real (not open-mouth-baby-style) kisses with sound and all!  So whenever we wanted a smooch, we would just say that line and he would smile and give a kiss.  Precious :)
Sweet baby in blue
  • The sweetness continued in Ryan's new desire to "help" me with certain chores around the house.  His favorite is to switch around the laundry from the washer to the dryer for me.  I hand him the items and he expertly tosses them into the dryer.  To start with, he would get bored after 4-5 items, but now he will switch over a whole load for me!  Then the reward is getting to watch the dryer start tumbling the clothes.  He also started helping to throw things away, particularly diapers.  After a change, I hand him the rolled up dipe and he will toss it into the Diaper Genie and beam with pride.  He is such my little helper!
Chowing down on some breakfast
  • I had been trying for a while to encourage Ry to clap after exciting things happened.  It clicked for him this month and now he is a clapping maniac!  Any time we cheer or start clapping, he will break out in a smile and join in on the clapping fun.  Sometimes if he does something he deems worthy of praise, he will start the clapping himself and try to get us to hop in.
He loves this picture of himself...
  • In the milestone department, we had a lot of HUGE developments this month:
    • He has been toying with standing without holding on to anything.  Usually only for quick moments as he moves from couch to ottoman or toy to toy, but then he will get distracted by something and just be standing on his own for a full 30 seconds before he realizes what he's doing and sits down.
    • And while he's up standing, he might as well take a few steps, right?!  Matt was leaving for Yuma the week of Ryan's birthday and was getting worried that he might miss the first steps.  He came into the play room and sat down with a mug of coffee before leaving for his trip.  I jokingly said to Ry, "I bet if you walk to Daddy, he'll give you some of that coffee."  Did I mention our son loves coffee?  He will do anything to get his hands on our drinks - hot or cold.  As soon as I said that, he surprised us both by letting go of the toy he was playing with and taking two tentative, wobbly steps towards Matt!!  We were all so happy that Matt not only got to see the first official steps, but they were for him (or coffee)!
    • The biggest life-changer of a milestone for me was that Ryan suddenly decided that he was cool with sleeping through the night!  We put him down between 7:30 and 8 now, and don't hear a peep from him until 6 the next morning.  I kept thinking it was a fluke and not a trend, but we are going on about a month now of all-night sleeping.  And it is incredible what an uninterrupted night of sleep is doing for both of us.  We both have more energy, more patience, and just in general feel better.  It is glorious.  I am so thankful for this development.  And now I truly look forward to our time right before bed and first thing in the morning since I miss seeing him in the middle of the night now!

So that's it.  12 months of Ryan and all of the glorious things he has been doing and learning.  I'll post the birthday blog and year-in-review soon, but I think that this will be it for the monthly updates.  Moving forward, we'll just blog about the big things as they happen.

Ryan - Month 11

As Ryan got dangerously close to being a whole year old, he had some fun 11-month adventures.  A quick recap:
  • Putting lids on is his new "thing."  Anything with a screw top, he is all over.  Water bottles are his specialty, and since I have them with me most of the time, he gets a lot of practice.  I hand him the lid, he puts it back onto the bottle, and then I cheer for him while he beams.  Remove the lid.  Repeat.  We play this until one of us (me) gets tired of it and stops.  But his hand-eye coordination is getting so good!  It used to take him a few fumbled attempts to play The Lid Game, as we call it, but now he can get it in one shot.
  • A cute one this month - he started reaching for things and people that he wants.  He stretches out his little arm and hand towards whatever it is that he wants, and then wiggles his fingers in a "come here" motion until we give him what he's reaching for.  We call it his soliloquy hand since he looks like he's in a Shakespeare drama while he reaches :)
To be, or not to be...
  • The toys of the month: Quad copter, the shape sorter and cars.  Matt got the quad copter (a little remote controlled helicopter) for Christmas "for Ryan" even though the box said ages 13 and up.  Well I shouldn't have been so skeptical because it turns out Ryan loves that thing.  He loves to watch it fly and land in Matt's hand and do flips.  When Matt starts putting on the Baby Bjorn carrier at home, Ryan has learned that it is quad copter time and will fast and furious crawl to Matt to get strapped in for the fun. The shape sorter is a little wooden toy with colorful shape blocks that fit in to coordinating slots on a base.  Some of the shapes are harder than others, but he is a pro at the cylinder and the hexagon for now.  And then cars.  I think it must be wired in his little boy DNA, but that kid loves everything with wheels.  And he will push them around the floor making a vrooming raspberry noise with his lips all day.  Precious.
Reading with Dad
  • We finally found a food that Ryan did not immediately love in good ol' broccoli.  Matt and I were having some broccoli with dinner one night, and I typically just share whatever I am eating with Ryan.  I gave him a small piece of the flowery top, and he popped it in his mouth... then made the sourest face I've ever seen.  He kept trying to chew it around in his mouth, but was not looking happy about it, so I finally coaxed him to spit it out if he didn't like it.  He spit it out, but then decided to give it one more try.  Still awful.  This time, he pulled it out of his mouth, looked at it, and then smiled and tried to offer it to me to eat.  Nice try, kid.  Finally he literally forced himself to eat one piece but you could tell it was paining him and he was not enjoying it, so we didn't even offer him any more.  Since then, he has changed his stance on broccoli and will now eat it with no issues, but that first try was so funny Matt and I were in stitches!

  • Ryan also started honing his walking skills this month by practicing with his walk-behind Lion toy.  It is a cute little baby walker that plays music while you're using it to encourage the baby to keep walking.  He can push it from one side of his play room to the other with no problem, but still hasn't figured out turning around.  So either we have to stand by and keep flipping him around, or he will just walk around to the other side and push it back across the room backwards.
Next up is the 1-year milestone post, followed by some super cute pics from his first birthday party :)

The Resolution - Month 2 - Room 2

It’s the end of February and we have stuck to our resolution for another month!  This month we worked on the front living room area.*

Before

This area had been mostly unused since we moved in.  We put the pool table and Foosball table in here as the informal start to a game room.  But if you had been to our old house you would know that the pool table was more often used as a storage table than used for playing pool.  This continued on into the new house where it again was mostly used for storage and sometimes displaying General Mills samples.

Last month we finally decided to get rid of the pool table.  Its new home is at Doug’s house about a mile away where it is getting played on much more regularly.  The Foosball table was also moved.  Once again it resides on the back patio of the house.  This time I’m hoping the weather cover I made for it will actually protect it from the elements.
Good luck in your new home!

Now we were free to create a space that would actually be used.  We decided to turn it into a play area for Ryan.  Ryan is such a big part of our lives now he deserves a dedicated area downstairs.  This gives him a large space to play and to keep all his toys.  It also serves the purpose of ridding the other rooms in the house of extra baby clutter.  We are slowly transforming our main living room area back into a grown-up space by moving all the miscellaneous toys into the front room.

After
All the toys, neatly organized on the shelves.  (Ryan must not be around)

The cleaning task in this room was a little more involved than last month because of the huge, gorgeous, bay window.  Pamela painstakingly scrubbed each individual blind slat by hand.  She wasn't kidding when she said we would do a DEEP cleaning.

So Many Blinds

We brought down the love seat from our old sofa set that was sitting in the upstairs bonus room (the last remaining undefined room now).  The rest of the furniture and accessories come from our old friend IKEA.

All real IKEA items - not an exaggeration

Now we use this room all the time when we’re hanging out and playing with Ryan.  I’ll miss the pool table but this way is much better.  Perhaps when Ryan is older we can re-introduce a pool table and turn this area back into a game room.

* I’m never really sure what to call this room though.  We have been calling the big room near the kitchen with the fireplace and TV our living room.  This room could also be considered a “living room” but to avoid confusion it always needs an identifier like front living room or east living room.  I think incorporating extra room terms like Den and Rec Room could help clear things up.  I have an idea of how to rename these rooms to make sense but I would appreciate some input:

A)  Call it the Rec Room or Play Room; that’s clearly what it is.
B)  Call it a Den; it’s sunken down a step, like any good den.
C)  Call it the Living Room (no identifier); the room near the kitchen is more of a Family Room or Great Room anyway.
D)  Call it the Front Room; it’s in the front of the house, no need to deal with fancy room names.
